I went on a short camping trip during the middle of this week to gather some of my thoughts, get in some good hiking and cycling, and just generally clear my head. I Headed out to Lost Maples Natural Area State Park, knowing very little about the area other than it is popular in the fall when the leaves change (being Texas this means November!).
At this point I should say that having lived in Austin for 4 years now, I have developed some ingrained opinions about Texas. I love Austin. But after growing up in WA and going to college in western NC I’ve never felt Texas was particularly pretty. The “hill country” west of Austin has always been a bit of a disappointment. Boy did that all change near Lost Maples! This area was absolutely gorgeous. The picture from this post was taken during a 75 mile bike ride I took on Wednesday near the accurately named town of Utopia, TX.

Okkervil River - Okkervil River Song

Classic by our local austinites.

Brad and I got in our longest run of the season today, with one month to go until the Livestrong Austin Marathon. Pumped!

Gary Clark Jr - Don’t Owe You a Thang

Deeerrrrtttttyyyy guitar. Austin’s own.

We just got back from Explosions in the Sky at the new Moody Theater. No one else does anything like them. 90 minutes with not a word after an intro of “we’ll play with all of our heart if you listen with yours.” No other band can have zero vocals, and still capture an entire audience. Seeing them live, especially in our mutual hometown of Austin, was a complete treat.

Explosions in the Sky - Let Me Back In

Explosions in the sky audio posts don’t work great on Tumblr because all their songs are so long, so the Youtube imbed will have to do. BUT, we’re going to see them this Friday live at the new ACL theater in downtown Austin. We saw them live at the 930 club in DC several years ago and it was an amazing show. Can’t wait to see them again, and to experience the incredibly cool looking new ACL theater for the first time as well.

The Lonely Forest - I Don’t Want to Live There

Live from the great state of Washington, The Lonely Forest popped up on my Pandora awhile back and I’ve been digging them ever since. They have a new album coming out next week, and are playing tomorrow night at Maggie Mae’s for SXSW. Living in ATX has its perks!

This song has one of those moments at the end (basically the entire last minute) where everything comes together perfectly for a great crescendo of sound. When I found out Chris Walla from Death Cab produced their album, I wasn’t surprised.

Doc & Merle Watson - Home Sweet Home

A classic from the master. We had a great Thanksgiving here in Austin including an amazing meal made by Jenny. Austin is beginning to feel more and more like home. Even so, I’ll always miss the big family gathering Thanksgiving my family has always done in Seattle/Portland/Spokane. I can’t wait to create that same feeling here in Austin as we create our own family.
